What Is Texas Hold'em Poker?

Texas Hold'em is the world's most widely played poker variant — the game you see on ESPN broadcasts, in James Bond films, and at the final tables of the World Series of Poker (WSOP). At okgg, it is one of the most popular real-money games among players from Dhaka, Chittagong, and Sylhet — and for good reason. The rules are straightforward to learn, but the depth of skill involved keeps experienced players engaged for years.

The objective is simple: make the best five-card poker hand using any combination of your two private hole cards and five shared community cards. You compete against other players — not the house — which means skill, position, and reading your opponents matter as much as the cards you are dealt.

okgg offers Texas Hold'em across multiple formats: cash tables with real BDT stakes, sit-and-go tournaments, and live dealer poker rooms powered by Evolution Gaming where a real human dealer manages the game in real time via HD video stream. Whether you are a complete beginner from Rajshahi picking up cards for the first time, or a seasoned player from Dhaka looking for higher-stakes action, okgg has a table that suits your bankroll and skill level.

How Many Players?

Texas Hold'em is typically played with 2–10 players at a single table. Online cash tables at okgg run heads-up (2 players), short-handed (3–6 players), and full-ring (7–9 players) formats simultaneously across different stake levels.

The Deck and Cards

The game uses a standard 52-card deck with no jokers. Each player receives exactly two private hole cards (dealt face-down, visible only to them). Five community cards are then dealt face-up in the centre of the table over three stages: the Flop, the Turn, and the River.

Who Wins the Pot?

The player who makes the best five-card hand — from any combination of their two hole cards and the five community cards — wins the entire pot. Alternatively, a player can win by making all other opponents fold before showdown, regardless of the strength of their actual hand.

Poker Hand Rankings Guide

Before you sit at any Texas Hold'em table on okgg, you need to know these ten hand rankings cold. Listed from strongest to weakest — the top of this list beats everything below it.

1
Royal Flush
A, K, Q, J, 10 — all the same suit. The rarest and unbeatable hand in poker. Probability: roughly 1 in 650,000 hands.
A♠ K♠ Q♠ J♠ 10♠
2
Straight Flush
Five consecutive cards of the same suit (but not Royal). Example: 7♦ 8♦ 9♦ 10♦ J♦.
7♦ 8♦ 9♦ 10♦ J♦
3
Four of a Kind
All four cards of the same rank plus any fifth card (the kicker). Also called "quads". Very rarely beaten at showdown.
K♣ K♦ K♥ K♠ 7
4
Full House
Three cards of one rank plus two cards of another rank (three-of-a-kind + a pair). Ranked by the three-of-a-kind component first.
Q♣ Q♦ Q♥ 9♠ 9♦
5
Flush
Any five cards of the same suit, not in sequence. Ranked by the highest card in the flush, then second-highest, and so on.
A♦ J♦ 8♦ 5♦ 2♦
6
Straight
Five consecutive cards of mixed suits. Ace can be high (A-K-Q-J-10) or low (A-2-3-4-5). A low-ace straight is called the "wheel".
5♣ 6♦ 7♥ 8♠ 9♣
7
Three of a Kind
Three cards of the same rank plus two unmatched kickers. When made using one hole card and two community cards, it is called "trips". When made with a pocket pair + one board card, it is called "a set".
J♣ J♦ J♥ 6 3
8
Two Pair
Two different pairs plus one kicker. Ranked first by the higher pair, then the lower pair, then the kicker. Very common at showdown.
A♣ A♦ 8♥ 8♠ K
9
One Pair
Two cards of the same rank plus three unmatched kickers. The most frequently made hand in Texas Hold'em. Pocket pairs are particularly strong.
K♣ K♦ 9 5 2
10
High Card
No combination formed — the hand is judged by its highest card. In a heads-up pot where both players miss the board, the player holding the highest card wins.
A♠ J♦ 8♣ 5♥ 2♠

okgg Tip: The most common beginner mistake is overvaluing a one-pair hand on a wet board (a board with many draw possibilities). Study the community cards carefully — if the board shows three cards of the same suit and you hold only one pair, you may be losing to a flush already made by another player.

Betting Rounds and Game Structure

A single hand of Texas Hold'em progresses through four distinct betting rounds. Understanding what happens at each stage — and why — is the foundation of solid poker strategy. At okgg's real-money tables, each round follows a strict clockwise order starting from the player immediately to the left of the dealer button.

Before any cards are dealt, two forced bets called the Small Blind and the Big Blind are posted by the two players to the left of the dealer button. These create the initial pot and ensure there is always something to contest in every hand.

At each betting round, players act in turn with four options: Check (pass action without betting, only possible if no bet has been made), Bet/Raise (put chips into the pot), Call (match the current bet), or Fold (discard your hand and forfeit any claim to the pot).

Blind Structure at okgg

okgg cash tables run a variety of blind levels — from micro-stakes (Small Blind ৳5 / Big Blind ৳10) all the way up to high-roller tables (SB ৳500 / BB ৳1,000). Tournament blind levels increase on a timed schedule, adding pressure and driving action as play progresses.

Pre-Flop

Hole Cards Dealt — First Betting Round

Each player receives two private hole cards face-down. The first betting round begins with the player to the left of the Big Blind (called "Under the Gun"). Players decide to fold, call the big blind amount, or raise. This is where hand selection is critical — starting hand strength defines the foundation of your pre-flop strategy.

The Flop

Three Community Cards Revealed

After pre-flop betting concludes, the dealer burns one card and places three community cards face-up in the centre. These can be used by all players. The second betting round begins with the first active player to the left of the dealer button. The flop dramatically defines hand strength — roughly 71% of your final five-card hand is now visible.

The Turn

Fourth Community Card

A fourth community card is dealt face-up after the flop betting concludes. Also called "Fourth Street". Pot sizes typically grow significantly on the turn — draw hands either hit their outs or lose value, and strong made hands will typically bet for protection and value. Pot odds calculations become especially important here.

The River

Fifth and Final Community Card

The fifth and final community card is dealt face-up. After the last betting round concludes, any remaining players enter the Showdown, where they reveal their hole cards. The player with the best five-card hand wins the pot. No more cards are coming — this is where bluffing and value betting reach their peak importance.

Showdown

Cards Revealed — Pot Awarded

If two or more players remain after river betting, all active players reveal their hole cards. The best five-card combination (using any mix of hole cards and community cards) wins the pot. In the event of identical hand strength, the pot is split equally between tied players. The dealer button moves one position clockwise and a new hand begins.

Texas Hold'em Strategy for Beginners

Unlike slots or roulette, Texas Hold'em is a game where skill genuinely matters. These foundational strategy concepts will give any new okgg player a concrete edge over inexperienced opponents right from the first session.

1. Start Hand Selection

The most profitable adjustment any beginner can make is playing fewer hands pre-flop. Fold marginal hands like Q-7 offsuit or K-4 offsuit from early position. Strong starting hands — pocket pairs (AA through 77), big broadway cards (AK, AQ, AJ, KQ), and suited connectors (J-10s, 9-8s) — give you a statistical advantage from the outset. Patience is not passive; it is a core weapon.

2. Understand Position

Your seat position relative to the dealer button is one of the most powerful factors in Texas Hold'em. Acting last (being "in position") gives you full information — you see every opponent's action before you must decide. Late position players (the Button and Cutoff) can profitably play a wider range of hands than early position players. At okgg's live tables, always track which seats offer you positional advantage.

3. Pot Odds and Equity

Pot odds compare the current size of the pot to the cost of a call, expressed as a ratio or percentage. If the pot contains ৳1,000 and your opponent bets ৳200, you are getting 6-to-1 pot odds (you need roughly 14% equity to profitably call). Understanding this concept prevents costly calls on weak draws and identifies spots where calling is mathematically correct even against strong bets.

4. Reading the Board

A "wet" board (e.g., 8♦ 9♦ 10♠) has many draw possibilities — straights and flushes can be completed on the turn. A "dry" board (e.g., A♠ 7♥ 2♣) has few draw possibilities — made hands hold up better. Always analyse what your opponent could realistically hold given their pre-flop and post-flop actions, and adjust your bet sizing accordingly.

5. Controlled Bluffing

Bluffing is a legitimate tool — but only in the right spots. A good bluff tells a believable story: your betting line must be consistent with a strong hand your range can plausibly contain. Bluffing too frequently (especially at micro-stakes on okgg where opponents rarely fold) burns chips unnecessarily. Semi-bluffing — betting with a draw that can improve — is often safer than pure bluffing.

6. Bankroll Discipline

For cash game play, a standard guideline is to have at least 20–30 buy-ins for your chosen stake level before sitting down. At okgg's BDT tables, if you play the ৳10/৳20 blind level (max buy-in ৳2,000), your total poker bankroll should be ৳40,000–৳60,000 before treating that stake as your regular game. Moving down in stakes when on a downswing is a sign of discipline, not weakness. 18+ only.

Starting Hand Category Example Hands Early Position Middle Position Late Position (Button)
Premium Pairs AA, KK, QQ Raise / Re-raise Raise / Re-raise Raise / Re-raise
Strong Pairs JJ, TT, 99 Raise Raise Raise
Medium Pairs 88, 77, 66 Fold / Call Call / Raise Raise
Big Broadway AK, AQ, KQ (suited) Raise Raise Raise
Suited Connectors J10s, 98s, 87s Fold Call Raise / Call
Weak Aces A7o, A5o, A3o Fold Fold Call / Raise
Marginal Hands K9o, Q8o, J7o Fold Fold Fold / Call

s = suited; o = offsuit. This chart is a simplified guideline for beginners — experienced players adapt ranges based on opponent tendencies, stack sizes, and table dynamics.
